Superb
Herreweghe has completed what is possibly the finest complete cycle of Schumann’s symphonies with this release. The period instrument Orchestre des Champs-Elysees performs exquisitely and Herreweghe’s knowledge of 19th century performance practice, and his love of these scores, makes for truly perfect performances here and on the earlier disc of Schumann’s Second and Fourth Symphonies. Finally, a complete cycle that does justice to all four masterpieces. It’s been a long, long wait.
