The singing is warm, impeccably tasteful, and the recording is very “present”.
I would fault Sony for stinting on the CD booklet: these are famous songs, translated long ago; and it would have cost Sony very little to include the Italian and English words in the booklet. The booklet makes a big difference, and just putting stuff on a web page is not a substitute that is convenient. The same stinting occurred with Kaufmann’s “An Italian Night – Live from the Waldbühne Berlin” and his “Wien” recordings — no song texts. This is especially vexing with the “Wien” CD, whose songs are in the curious Viennese dialect of German, which is not very intelligible to outsiders. Much as I admire Kaufmann’s taste and art, I’d have to think twice about new recordings with such useless booklets. It’s not fair to knock off a star for the record company’s stinginess, for that might reflect on so fine an artist’s performance.
