A Great German Singer Sings the Great German Composers

This CD is an album released early in Andreas Scholl’s career. The original cover was black and silver and showed a youthful Scholl in tux and white tie wearing somewhat boxy glasses.

Under any kind of of cover, this is a wonderful collection of the sacred works of some of the greatest German composers of the Baroque era. Scholl’s glorious voice is full of youthful exuberance as he sings Buxtehude’s Jubliante Domino. Frequently, Bach overshadows all other composers in this era but the name of Bach here is Johann Cristoph Bach, not Johann Sebastian.

A couple of the composers on this album are Italian and are included on dubious grounds. Either because they worked in Germany or in a German manner or just inspired a German music master to rework their music? I’m not sure, but their music is wonderful and Scholl sings it with verve which is justification enough. This is a great opportunity to get the fabulous German countertenor singing church music from the grand German tradition. Take a pew and listen.
