This 10CD collection consists of editor Andrzej Chłopecki’s personal choice of 70 works by 70 Polish composers as recorded during the Festival concerts given between 1956-2005. It was prepared for the 50th Anniversary of the “Warsaw Autumn” Contemporary Music Festival.
Known Warsaw Autumn, which suddenly appeared in 1956, quickly became a musical Mecca for lovers of the avant-garde from the East and West. Music, sounding at this festival, went away from the socialist realism of the model. Execution of such music in all other socialist countries would be prohibited by political decree. What happened in the 1956? It was during the Cold War. The struggle was mainly in the field of propaganda. It was necessary to show the West that could a socialist society. And since there was no boasting in the economy than someone who was both close to influential persons in the state and was himself a gray cardinal of the Polish Composers’ Union, came up with: perhaps, like so shock the world of openness and modernity in the field of culture. It will not hurt anyone, workers and so on the festival concerts will not go, and custom mass songs and cantatas for Glory “will be born on the tables of even the most avant-garde composers. And so the authorities accepted the Fall, in return for good export product – a card of socialism. To make this situation does not spiral out of control – as the control was to be established, as we know, over everyone and everything – quietly drawn up some precise principles of choice under the auspices of the Union, which controlled the only festival in the country “dangerous” music. Thus began exist Warsaw-autumn establishment. Warsaw festival has become a legend.
For political reasons, the annual festival canceled even twice – in 1957 and 1982. Therefore, the half-century of the “Warsaw Autumn” celebrated twice – in 2006 and 2007.
Although mid 50-ies of XX century in Poland was considered a “thaw”, and to the organizers of the festival “Warsaw Autumn” was merely to show themselves and be seen, from the very beginning he was more than a festival: “VO” largely determined the level of the relationship of art (in this case – the musical) and the authorities in the countries of the socialist camp. In 1972, for example, from the USSR in the last minute instead of the experimenter Edison Denisov sent Tikhon Khrennikov (though Denisov yet appeared in the program – under a pseudonym, as co-author of the collective works of chamber “Encyclopedia”). And in the twenty-first century, was booed and called “socialist realism” does not show anyone, but a living classic of Polish music of Krzysztof Penderecki.
