If the Devil inspired this unearthly music….

….then the Devil must surely have a beautiful soul! Guiseppi Tartini, the composer, claims that “the Devil” came to him in a dream, stood at the foot of his bed and played this violin sonata for him–but unfortunately, Tartini could not remember all of it. What he did remember, however, is exquisite. I love violin music, and the Devil’s Trill is breathtakingly beautiful stuff. The version on this particular CD is not as passionately performed as the Liviu Prunaru YouTube rendering (which is to me, the best I’ve yet heard, in fact part 3 moved me to tears the first time I heard it)…however, this CD as a whole is VERY relaxing. There is no part of it that is the least bit annoying, as some classical music can be, and in fact I often play this CD while I meditate. I prefer this CD to Andrew Manze’s performance of the sonata. As for the “Devil’s Trill” itself, all I can say is if this is as much as Tartini could remember, then I’d like to be front row center if ever the rest of that concert is performed…
